Since PEDTest Australia was started in November 2021, we have been recording customer results in a database. The purpose of the database is to track steroid brands available in Australia and how their quality changes over time to provide statistics to the fitness community. The database is also used for kit quality control and product development.
The database records the date, brand, steroid type and test result for individual vials in each kit. Comments are added if the user mentions blood results and side effects, and whether the result indicates chemical contamination (precipitation when tested). Each result is classified as Confirmed, Swapped, Bunk or Inconclusive. No customer information is recorded.
The database is not public, and we do not “name and shame” brands unless they pose an obvious threat to public safety. We have a post that contains reported scam websites, which is updated periodically throughout the year.
We do not recommend brands, suppliers or websites, or encourage illegal drug use.
During the first half of 2024 customers reported results for 453 oils, 180 orals and 4 raws (imported steroid concentrates), for a total of 637 samples – a 20% increase from the same time last year.
Brands
157 unique brand names were reported, including from compounding pharmacies and some unlabelled brands. Almost all of these brands are produced by underground labs within Australia using imported Chinese “raws”.
This is the first year we have also had results from previously unknown brand names imported from Bulgaria, New Zealand, Canada, India and Poland.
Since the sudden increase in websites converting from steroid supply to financial scamming around the start of 2024, many new brands have appeared, and previously minor brands have become more dominant in the market. Several previously dominant brands appear to be waning in popularity as the number of their reported results has dropped.
Increase in Scam Brands and Poor Products
| Total number of presence results | Confirmed | Swapped | No Steroid | Inconclusive | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oils | 379 | 250 | 58 | 38 | 34 |
| Orals | 180 | 97 | 32 | 21 | 28 |
| Raws | 4 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
(presence test results only)
| Total number of potency results | Bunk | Underdosed | Expected Dosage Range | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test E/C | 192 | 15 | 87 | 90 |
| Tren E/A | 14 | 1 | 2 | 11 |
Swapped products in the first half of 2024 (with ingredients different from those on the label) stayed the same for orals at 17% and oils at 15%, very similar to what they were in 2023.
The number of bunk (no steroid) orals reported dropped from 20% in 2022 to 7% in 2023 but has now risen back up to 11%.
The number of bunk oil potency results has risen from 2% to 10%, and the number of underdosed oils has also risen from 34% to 43%. This is a drastic increase in a six-month period and likely shows the effects of several large websites switching from selling legitimate products to scam products in early 2024.
Test E products have shown an increase in ester swaps, ester contamination and inconclusive results, likely due to blending in 2024 compared to previous years.
Tren products have been fairly reliable this year so far – this may be due to a smaller volume of results reported and we will be able to make a more informed assessment at the end of the year.
Lab Analysis
In 2022, we noted multiple brands were showing evidence of “chemical” contamination which is most likely due to a residue left in the “raws” during manufacture in China. This has continued to be observed in kit results since.
When tested using a kit, “contaminated” samples develop varying degrees of precipitation – the results in the kit vials are cloudy, chunky or solid due to additional reactions taking place. This contamination can interfere with the reaction of the steroid being tested, causing the resulting colours to be lighter and more difficult to interpret. It appears to be most often present in enanthate ester products.
In 2024 we have collected and sent more than 30 samples of various steroid products to an Australian forensic laboratory, who have begun to test for various forms of potential contamination, including heavy metals. Due to the size and cost of the study, it will be conducted in stages throughout 2024, and the results will be publicly available for both our customers and researchers.
Our usual analysis of donated samples is on hold until this study is complete.
